Death insurance: what it covers and why so many families have it without fully realising
What does death insurance cover and how does it differ from life insurance? We explain it clearly from our broker in Marbella. No small print.
There are conversations nobody wants to have, but when they happen at the right time, they bring enormous relief to those we love most. Death insurance is one of those practical, caring decisions that more and more families in Marbella and the Costa del Sol are making calmly, without urgency and with a clear head. In this article we explain, without fuss or drama, what it involves, what it covers and why it may make a great deal of sense for you and your loved ones.
What does death insurance actually cover?
In short: it ensures that, when that moment comes, your family has no need to worry about the paperwork or the financial cost of the funeral.
Standard cover includes the complete organisation of the funeral service (or cremation, if that is the wish of the insured person), the supply of the coffin or urn, transportation, flowers, death notices and obituaries, and the management of the documents and administrative formalities required after the death.
Many policies also include assistance in the event of death away from the usual place of residence, even abroad, covering repatriation of the body to Spain. For those who travel frequently or have family spread across different countries, this is a detail that is worth a great deal.
Death insurance vs. life insurance: aren't they the same thing?
This is the question we are asked most often. They are complementary, but they cover different things.
Death insurance pays for the service: it organises and meets the cost of the funeral or cremation. The family does not receive a cash sum, but nor do they have to make any outlay or manage anything during one of the worst moments of their lives.
Life insurance, on the other hand, pays a lump sum to the designated beneficiaries (a partner, children…) so that they can maintain their standard of living, pay a mortgage or cover any other need. They are different products with different purposes, and many families choose to have both.

Why do so many families on the Costa del Sol take out this insurance?
The main reason is a very human one: not wanting to leave that burden to others. Arranging a funeral involves phone calls, quotes, paperwork and decisions at a time of grief. Having death insurance means all of that is already planned and taken care of.
There is also a financial aspect that should not be overlooked. A complete funeral service can cost between €3,000 and €6,000 or more, depending on the circumstances. The premium for death insurance, by contrast, tends to be very affordable, particularly if taken out at a younger age.
In Marbella and the Costa del Sol, where many international families and older people who live alone or far from their children reside, this insurance is particularly relevant given the possibility of including repatriation cover and assistance outside Spain.
What you should know before taking out a policy: key points
- Payment options: you can pay the premium monthly, quarterly, annually or even as a single payment. Some insurers offer a level premium (fixed for life) whilst others adjust it over the years.
- Does the premium increase with age? It depends on the type of policy. If you take it out when you are young with a level premium, the cost remains stable. If you take it out later in life, the initial premium will be higher, but also fixed.
- You can include your whole family: many policies allow you to insure a spouse, children and even parents under a single contract at a lower cost than insuring them separately.
- Repatriation included: check that the policy covers transfer from abroad, especially if you travel frequently or have residency in more than one country.
- Waiting period: some policies have an initial waiting period during which certain cover does not yet apply. It is important to be aware of this before signing.
- Formalities included: the best policies handle death certificates, registry procedures and other paperwork that would otherwise be a significant headache.
Frequently asked questions about death insurance
Is it the same as life insurance?
No. Death insurance covers the cost and organisation of the funeral. Life insurance pays a lump sum to the beneficiaries. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
Does it cover repatriation if I die outside Spain?
In many cases, yes, but it depends on the policy. This is one of the points most worth reviewing, particularly if you live between several countries or travel regularly.
Does the premium increase with age?
It depends on the type of contract. There are level premium policies (fixed) and policies with periodic reviews. We explain everything before you sign anything.
Can I include my whole family on a single policy?
Yes. This is a very common option and is usually more cost-effective than taking out individual policies. You can include a partner, children and even parents or in-laws.
