The Lane That Can Save Lives

There are things we know perfectly well in Spain… until we actually need them. The seatbelt, the warning triangle, the right of way at a roundabout. And now there is a new one to add: the emergency lane — also known as the emergency corridor. It is the manoeuvre that many people have seen in videos from Germany, thinking "how orderly they are", and which, from October 2026, will be compulsory here too.

Because yes: if you regularly drive along the A-7 between Marbella and Málaga, or on any motorway on the Costa del Sol, this affects you directly.

As we mentioned in our latest Instagram post, the regulation already has a confirmed date of entry into force and specific penalties. Here we explain everything you need to know, plainly and simply.

What the emergency lane (or corridor) is and how to form it

The emergency corridor is the clear gap that drivers must create between lanes so that priority vehicles — ambulances, fire engines, police — can pass through when there is a traffic jam or slowdown. It sounds straightforward, but there is a technique to it.

The regulation comes into force on 1 October 2026 through the new Article 32 of the General Traffic Regulations, and will be compulsory on motorways and dual carriageways whenever a priority emergency vehicle with its acoustic and visual signals activated is approaching.

The manoeuvre depends on the number of lanes:

• With 2 lanes per direction: the left-hand lane moves to the left and the right-hand lane moves to the right. The gap is created in the centre.
• With 3 or more lanes: the left-hand lane moves towards the left-hand hard shoulder and all other lanes move to the right. The gap is again created between the first lane and the rest.

Failing to carry out this manoeuvre when a priority vehicle has its signals activated is a serious offence: a €200 fine and 4 penalty points on your licence. This is not a warning — it is the law.

Why motorcyclists have a particular stake in this

If you ride a motorbike, this matters more to you than to anyone else — and for two reasons that pull in opposite directions.

On one hand, motorcyclists are those who depend most on the corridor being formed correctly. When there is a road accident involving a motorcycle, every minute counts. The ambulance arriving sooner can be the difference between a recovery and a tragedy. Riding a motorbike means accepting a greater degree of physical risk than travelling by car, and that risk makes the swift arrival of emergency services literally vital.

On the other hand, motorcyclists must exercise extreme caution when riding through that gap. In a traffic jam, as cars begin to move to the sides, the central space narrows and changes shape unpredictably. Doors opening, wing mirrors protruding, distracted drivers unsure of exactly where to go — all of this turns that corridor into a hazardous environment for anyone passing through it on two wheels.

So if you are on a motorbike: reduce your speed, anticipate movements, and remember that you too must yield the gap when you are the driver caught in the traffic jam, not just make use of the space when someone else has created it.
