Old Car or Historic Vehicle? They're Not the Same Thing (and Your Insurance Should Reflect That)

Is your car over 30 years old? We explain when it qualifies as historic, Groups A and B, and how to insure it properly in Marbella. No jargon.

¿Coche viejo o coche histórico? No es lo mismo (y tu seguro lo debe reflejar)

Do you have a car that's over 30 years old sitting in the garage and assume it automatically qualifies as a historic vehicle? Be careful — here in Marbella we come across many clients in exactly that situation… and age is only the first requirement.

When is a vehicle truly "historic"?

The Historic Vehicle Regulations, updated in 2024, set out four conditions that must all be met simultaneously:

1. At least 30 years old. This is the starting point, but by no means the only one.

2. A model that is no longer manufactured. If the manufacturer is still producing that model, it doesn't qualify.

3. Preserved in its original condition. No significant changes to the engine, brakes, steering or bodywork. If it was extensively modified at some point, it may not make the cut.

4. Properly maintained. Being old isn't enough — it must be well looked after.

The process: Group A and Group B

The good news is that the process has been simplified. There are now two routes depending on the vehicle's situation:

Group A is the most straightforward and cost-effective option. It applies to cars already registered in Spain with a valid MOT (ITV). The process is more direct and the cost is lower.

Group B applies to imported vehicles, those that have been permanently deregistered, or those of special heritage interest. It involves a more comprehensive process, but is perfectly accessible provided the vehicle meets the requirements.

In both cases, you will need to undergo a specific technical inspection for historic vehicles, which is distinct from the standard MOT.

What does it mean to drive with historic vehicle registration?

Historic vehicle status comes with its advantages… and its limitations. The most important: the vehicle may only be driven on an occasional basis, with a maximum of 96 days per year. It cannot be used as an everyday car.

In return, MOT inspections are less frequent and, in general, the vehicle receives differentiated treatment that recognises its historical and cultural value.

What about insurance? It remains compulsory

This is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter on the Costa del Sol: the assumption that if the car is rarely used, insurance matters less. In fact, quite the opposite is true.

As a vehicle used occasionally and kept in excellent condition, there are specialist insurance policies for historic vehicles that tend to be more affordable than standard car insurance. However, that doesn't mean you should settle for just any policy: the cover should be tailored to these motoring treasures, including an agreed valuation, coverage at rallies and events, and recovery in the event of a breakdown.

If your classic collection also includes a motorcycle, bear in mind that there are motorcycle insurance policies with similar conditions available for vintage bikes.

And before you renew or take out a new policy, take a look at this article: your car insurance may not cover you in situations you wouldn't expect. With a classic vehicle, the small print matters twice as much.
