Is your card's travel insurance enough? Find out what travel insurance really covers and when you need your own policy. Advice in Marbella & Costa del Sol.

If you live on the Costa del Sol and travel frequently — whether for work, pleasure or to visit family — you have probably thought at some point: "Why should I take out travel insurance when my card already covers me?" It is a very common doubt. And also a mistake that can prove extremely costly. In this article, we explain what a travel insurance policy really covers and why your bank card's insurance may not be sufficient.
What does travel insurance really cover?
A good travel insurance policy goes far beyond what most people imagine. It is not simply "in case I fall ill". It covers a wide range of situations that could ruin a trip — or cause problems that go well beyond it.
The most common areas of cover include:
- Medical assistance abroad: hospitalisation, emergency treatment, surgical procedures and medical repatriation if required.
- Trip cancellation: if illness, bereavement or other justified circumstances prevent you from travelling, you recover the money you have paid.
- Delayed or lost baggage: financial compensation if the airline loses your luggage or it arrives late.
- Flight delay: cover for meals and accommodation expenses if your flight is delayed by a specified number of hours.
- Public liability: if you accidentally cause damage to a third party during your trip.
- Accidents: cover in the event of disability or accidental death during travel.
- Legal assistance: if you encounter a legal problem at your destination.
And this is only the basic core. Depending on the policy, you can extend cover to include adventure sports, pregnancy, pre-existing medical conditions or long-stay travel.
Your bank card's travel insurance: is it enough?
Many credit cards — particularly mid-range and premium cards — include travel insurance as a benefit. It sounds great, but you need to read the small print.
The problem is that this type of cover tends to be full of conditions that are not always met in practice:
- It usually only activates if you paid for the trip using that specific card. If you bought your flight with a different card or from a bank account, you are not covered.
- Medical cover limits are often very low for destinations such as the United States, Canada or Asia, where a single hospitalisation can cost tens of thousands of euros.
- Trip cancellation is almost never included, or it comes with very strict requirements.
- Pre-existing conditions — diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems — are typically excluded.
- The customer service line can be difficult to reach in a genuine emergency.
In short: card insurance may be adequate for short, straightforward trips. But if something goes seriously wrong, it will most likely fall short.
When is it particularly important to take out a standalone travel insurance policy?
There are situations in which having a dedicated travel policy is not a luxury but a genuine necessity:
- If you are travelling to countries with expensive private healthcare (the USA, Japan, Australia, etc.).
- If you have a chronic illness or pre-existing medical condition.
- If the trip involves a significant financial outlay and you want to protect that investment against cancellation.
- If you are taking part in high-risk sports (skiing, scuba diving, climbing, etc.).
- If you are travelling with children or elderly relatives.
- If the trip is lengthy — more than two or three weeks — or involves multiple destinations.
From Marbella, many of our clients travel to international destinations throughout the year. And more than one has discovered, at precisely the moment they needed it, that their card insurance did not cover what they expected.
How to choose the right travel insurance
Not all travel insurance policies are the same, and the cheapest option is not always the best. The key is to match the cover to your actual profile: destination, duration, planned activities and state of health.
Some key points to check before taking out a policy:
- Medical cover limit (a minimum of €150,000 is recommended for destinations outside Europe).
- Whether pre-existing conditions are covered and under what terms.
- What circumstances qualify as valid grounds for trip cancellation.
- Whether repatriation of remains in the event of death is included.
- The 24-hour assistance telephone number and whether it is genuinely reachable from your destination.
